Lunkarya sows
The Lunkarya was 'created' in Sweden in 1986. The breed has never been in the UK, until recently, after some imported by Heather at CavyLand sparked an interest in this unusual cavy. It will take a number of years until the breed is formally recognised in the UK, although it has been in Germany and it's native Sweden. The Lunkarya is the first time a 'curly' gene has risen in a long-haired cavy. They are based on the Peruvian model, however, the hair is incredibly harsh and curly.
Lunkarya is pronounced 'Lunka-ree-a' and comes from the Swedish word for sheep!
Lunkarya or Lunka is a longhaired cavy with a rexoid type gene. This gene is different than the rexoid gene found in the texel, alpaca and merino and creates a cavy that has a very coarse, rough hair structure very similar to wire coated dogs The Lunkarya has an "unkempt" appearance and often the hair is spikey and has corkscrews. They come in a variety of colours.
